“The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF) is saddened by the resignation of the Rt Hon. Boris Johnson MP yesterday as Conservative Member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip.

“We would like to pay tribute to his work as Prime Minister to advance animal welfare We were delighted when Boris Johnson talked on promoting animal welfare in his first speech as Prime Minister on the steps of Downing Street.  His commitment to animals extended beyond words, into decisive action. Under Boris Johnson’s leadership Defra published the world-leading Action Plan for Animal Welfare which paved the way for the Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act and the formation of the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill.

“The Government also supported the Animal Welfare (Penalty Notices) Act, the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Act, the Glue Traps (Offences) Act, the Environment Act and the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway. During his time as Prime Minister Defra pledged to consult on ending cages for laying hens and review the case for ending pig farrowing crates.

“We would like to thank Mr. Johnson for his time as Conservative MP, Prime Minister and the landmark animal welfare  laws that were introduced whilst he was in office. We wish him and his family the very best for the future.”

Chris Platt and Lorraine Platt, Co-Founders of the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF)
