This week, Parliament took a significant step in the long-overdue discussion on mandatory labelling, consumer transparency and legislative oversight when Tatton MP Esther McVey secured leave to introduce a Ten Minute Rule Bill requiring compulsory labelling of halal and kosher meat products.

Today (Wednesday 19th July 2023) Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF) has responded to the news that Defra has decided they do not “consider the time is right to consult on proposals to reform labelling for animal welfare”.
The Government has recently published their response to the call for evidence on labelling for animal welfare. The findings were very encouraging and certainly a clear step in the right direction towards making choosing higher welfare meat products easier for consumers.
The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF) has today responded to the Government’s Food Strategy Policy Paper. This comes following Henry Dimbleby’s report published last year on the UK food system.
If implemented, labelling will provide British consumers with clear information about the meat they purchase, which in turn enables them to make informed decisions about the type of products they buy.
