On Tuesday 3 November, Esther McVey MP is scheduled to bring a Ten Minute Rule Motion on Food Labelling ( halal and kosher meat) before the House of Commons. The proposal would require compulsory labelling of halal and kosher meat and products containing it. It provides an opportunity to press for greater transparency about method of slaughter labelling.
Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation has long called for mandatory labelling showing methods of production and methods of slaughter. Our published position supports clear identification of method of slaughter allowing consumers to make informed choices. Clear labelling could help buyers recognise and support suppliers whose practices meet their choices. A workable system should give consumers accurate information which is factual and consistent.
This Ten Minute Rule Motion provides the opportunity to make the case for legislation on mandatory labelling showing method of slaughter and can help build parliamentary support. CAWF welcomes the opportunity to advance the case for transparency on labelling.
Parliament should use this opportunity to move towards clear, meaningful and enforceable labelling.
