London, 22nd March 2024

Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF) is delighted that John Spellar MP’s Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill passed Second Reading in the House of Commons today.

The Bill, which would end trophy hunting imports to Great Britain, delivers a critical Conservative Party Manifesto commitment. It also reflects a key component of Defra’s 2021 Action Plan for Animal Welfare. During the Second Reading MPs across parties attended to show their strong support, including Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation Patrons Henry Smith MP and Theresa Villiers MP.

Ending trophy hunting imports to Great Britain has received strong support from the British public. During today’s Second Reading Defra Minister Rebecca Pow MP also confirmed the Government supports the Bill.

Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation would like to thank Defra for their support for delivering this important Manifesto commitment, and all of the MPs who attended to voice their support for ending trophy hunting imports.

Lorraine Platt, Co-Founder of Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation, commented:We are delighted the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill has passed its Second Reading in the House of Commons today, the next step forward in securing this critical Manifesto commitment to end trophy hunting imports into Great Britain.

“Throughout its passage through the House of Commons this Bill, and its predecessor led by our Patron Henry Smith MP, have earned substantial support across every political party, as well as the British public.

“It is simply not acceptable in modern Britain to import trophy hunting imports. Generations to come will look back in horror at trophy hunting; we must consign our role in this vile trade to the history books. We look forward to continuing to support this critical Bill as it enters Committee Stage in due course.”
