Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation statement on the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill

Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation is disappointed by the statement delivered today by Minister for Farming and Rural Affairs the Rt Hon. Mark Spencer MP which confirmed the Government has made the decision to discontinue the passage of the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill. We believe this represents a missed opportunity to further enhance the welfare and protection of animals across the United Kingdom.

Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation Responds to Queen’s Speech 2022

CAWF is pleased to welcome the Government’s decision to carry over the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill into the next parliamentary session. This flagship Bill which forms an important part of the Action Plan for Animal Welfare will crucially ban live exports for fattening and slaughter and a number of other measures to protect our farmed animals, pets, and wild animals.

Second Reading of the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill

The Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, George Eustice, opened the Second Reading of the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill by noting that the UK was the first country in the world to pass legislation to protect animals as long ago as the Cruel Treatment of Cattle Act 1822.

Within weeks of being Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher introduced the Farm Animal Welfare Committee. Since then, Conservative governments have led the way in animal welfare.
