The Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation (CAWF) has today welcomed Patron Henry Smith MP’s Private Members Bill, the Hunting Trophies (Import Prohibition) Bill, which would ban trophy hunting imports to the UK.

CAWF is pleased to welcome the Government’s decision to carry over the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill into the next parliamentary session. This flagship Bill which forms an important part of the Action Plan for Animal Welfare will crucially ban live exports for fattening and slaughter and a number of other measures to protect our farmed animals, pets, and wild animals.

After their election in 2019, the Government followed through on manifesto promises with the publication of the Action Plan for Animal Welfare, a package of commitments within three flagship bills which together have the potential to make the UK a world-leader in animal welfare. These are the Animal Sentience, Kept Animals, and Animals Abroad Bills.

Animal health and welfare bills receive Royal Assent, further strengthen the UK’s position as a world leader for animal health and welfare.

Today the Conservative Animal Welfare Foundation has welcomed an amendment laid by Patron Henry Smith MP to the Animal Welfare (Kept Animals) Bill on the handling and transport of laying hens prior to slaughter.
